Salmon Fishing in The Namsen River at the beats Quilten and Urstadmaelen!

For the fly fishing enthusiast, these two Upper Namsen beats offer the epitome of classic fly water and there is equal opportunity to wade through the pools as well as fish from the boat. This part of the Namsen, “Queen of Rivers”, is located in stunningly beautiful scenery. Easily accessible by car, but still off from the main road, and well equipped, you are sheltered from traffic noise and able to make yourself very comfortable. You will find several roofed picnic areas with benches equipped with tables and grilling facilities as well as restrooms.

At the one kilometer long beat of Quilten , the varying currents offer an excellent opportunity for wading. In the midst of the river, there is an island with its own habitat of birds and plants, and a bathing zone. Excellent for tenting or going for a picnic, as well as being used as the starting point for fishing, it is accessible by a boat available for that purpose. By the riverside, you can stroll along a forest path as you watch the fish jump in the clear water.

At Urstadmælen, a one kilometer long beat, many an angler has caught their “really big fish”. Most prefer fishing the pools of this area from the boats that are provided, but there are also some who like to stand on the riverside. There is opportunity to camp by car or tent.

How to get there:

By air: The closest airports are Trondheim Lufthavn Værnes (180 km distance) and Namsos (Lufthavn 60 km distance). The trains stop at Grong station (10 km distance) with three daily departures from Trondheim and Trondheim Lufthavn Værnes. See www.nsb.no

By car it is a 10 km long drive north of Grong, taking a right turn at the sign “Rossetnes”, then following the signs made of wood pointing toward Quilten and Urstadmælen. A short distance along the highway E6, north of the fishing area, there is the Namsen Laksakvarium. Here, lunch and dinner are served, and there is a Salmon Museum as well as the Salmon Aquarium where it is possible to watch the fish swimming underwater.
