Stjørdalselva is one of the best salmon river in Norway. It is known for its accessibility and decent price level. Stjørdalselva is a typical large salmon river with history dating back to the middle of the eighteen hundreds. The watercourse is structured according to The Environment Agencies requirements. The administrative responsibility lie with the Stjørdalsvassdraget Elveeierlag, which represents around 140 fishermen.
Stjørdalselva is located in Nord-Trøndelag county and goes through Meråker and Stjørdal municipality.
Stjørdalselva begins in the center of Meråker and runs through the farming communities of Gudå, Flora, Sona and Hegra before it passes through the center of Stjørdal and ends in Trondheimsfjorden by Værnes airport.
The watercourse goes across Norway and has its origin in Sweden.
The salmon bearing stretch in the main river is 55 kilometers long from Nustadfossen in Meråker to the outlet by Værnes airport.
In addition to the main watercourse, there are two tributaries called Forra and Sona. They consists of salmon and sea trout. Forra has a 13 kilometers salmon bearing stretch to Storfossen. In Sona there are possibilities to fish for salmon all the way to Sonfossen which is located 6 kilometers up in Sondalen.
Unlike Stjørdalselva, there is no development for power plants production and the watercourse is protected.
The watercourse is subject to the protection regime of national salmon watercourses and culminates in the Trondheim Fjord which has been granted national salmon fjord status.
