Fishing rules for the Strynee river

Fishing for trout is not permitted.
Salmon over 75 cm in length and all trout are to be released back into the river.
Fishing pause between 01.00 to 04.00 and 13.00 to 16.00.
Fishing equipment in June: Fly.
Fishing in July and August: Fly, lure, worm (circle hook).
Fishing equipment at Soget: Fly, maximum hook 6, the entire fishing season.
All use of clappers is prohibited. Max 1 triple hook per equipment.
1 salmon per day, 2 salmon per week (under 75 cm).
The trout is protected and must be released again.

Administrative rules

Fishing license is personal (only one fisherman per rod/fishing license)
It is forbidden to keep fishing equipment at the river that is not compatible with the fishing that is to be practiced at the river.
There is no fishing from "Rise" and downwards during the night.
Damaged fish must not be released again. If a protected species is slaughtered, this must be reported to the river inspector on tel. +47 900 75 191 as soon as possible. Such catch is the property of the river owner association and must be handed in.
Farmed salmon must be slaughtered. Such catch must be reported to Stryn Elveeigarlag as soon as possible. The river owners association will register and document the catch.

The fisherman is obliged to:

Follow the fishing rules for the Stryne river.

Register and report all catches within 24 hours (both harvested and released) at elveguiden.no

Take shell samples from all slaughtered fish according to guidelines for shell sampling.

Find out about routines for redeployment (info available at Elveguiden.no).

Register and report fish that are heavily infested with salmon lice.

The landowner is obliged to inform the fishermen about the current fishing regulations.

Fishing time:

It is permitted to fish for salmon in the period from 15 June to 15 August. All fishing for trout is prohibited. A closing of the river has been introduced in the following periods: from 01.00 to 04.00 and from 13.00 to 16.00. For Rise and down the river, the river is closed during the night.

Fishing vessel:

For catching anadromous salmon, it is only permitted to use a rod. Only one rod per person, one line per rod and one bait per line can be used. The vessel must not be abandoned while fishing. As bait, it is only permitted to use flies, lures and natural worm. Fishing with shrimp or artificial worm is prohibited. When importing natural worm into Norway, national regulations must be followed.

For worm fishing, only the use of circle hooks is permitted. Bait with more than a total of three single hooks or one triple hook must not be used. The distance between the hook shank and the hook tip must not be greater than 13 mm, for single hooks no greater than 15 mm. When using a fly as bait, the fly string or bobber must constitute the casting weight. The use of sinkers is only permitted when fishing with worm. When fishing with a dab, the dab must float on the surface. It is forbidden to fish in such a way that the fish will probably be hooked.

Natural worm = biological worm, for example earthworm. Artificial worm = technically produced worm, for example Gulp.

Fishing with a circle hook

When fishing with worm in the Stryne River, only circle hooks are permitted. The hooking properties of this type of hook are good. The hook will usually stick in the fish's mouth and thus reduce damage to the fish compared to using traditional "J-hooks". Fishing with a circle hook requires a slightly different way of "setting" the hook than what one might be used to when using of "J-hook". Lift the rod tip calmly so that the circle hook has time to "find" the corner of the mouth. This reduces the risk of hooking deep down in the throat with subsequent damage to the fish, and it facilitates re-release of the fish.

The risk of hooking injuries in the throat of the fish depends on the design of the hook. The greater the angle the hook tip has from the hook shank, the greater the risk of deep hooking in the throat, with subsequent damage to the fish.

Circle hooks are "size selective", i.e. size is important for hooking properties. In order for the hook to attach, the fish must get the entire hook into its mouth. It is therefore recommended to use smaller hook sizes than when using traditional hooks. Remember to clamp the barb on the hook.

Catch quotas

Quota for culling salmon under 75 cm is a maximum of 1 piece per day and 2 pieces per week. The quota applies to the individual fisherman and cannot be transferred to others. The daily quota is defined as the total number of salmon a person can kill during a day (fishing day). The fishing day follows the 24-hour entry on the fishing license (for weekly licenses and seasonal licenses the day of the day follows). When the daily quota is reached, all fishing must end until a new fishing day starts. The weekly quota is defined as the number of fish a person can collectively kill during a week (fishing week). The fishing week follows the week entry on the fishing license. For season tickets follow the week number.

Maximum target and reinstatement

All salmon over 75 cm and all trout must be released alive. We recommend that all spawning colored salmon be released alive. If there is any doubt as to whether the fish will survive a possible re-release, the fish must be euthanized and handed in. The fish does not go on the quota once it has been confirmed and submitted. Live released fish are not included in the quota. Releasing of fish must be done gently and in line with the guidelines of the Stryn River Owners' Association.

Reporting catch

All fish must be continuously reported electronically to Stryn Elveeigarlag throughout the season as soon as possible and no later than the same day. Reporting must be done at elveguiden.no. This also applies to released fish. All catch information will be published on elveguiden.no. Shell samples of all dead salmon must be taken and submitted.

Regulation of fishing at Soget

At Soget, only light fishing is permitted. Light fishing is fly fishing with a maximum size of 6 and the fly line must make up the casting weight. Sinks is prohibited.

Spawning stock target

Before 15 July, a population assessment must be carried out with a view to implementing extraordinary measures if there is a risk that the spawning population target will not be reached.

Sanctions for breaking the rules

Breaches of the fishing regulations are punishable, cf. Act on salmon and inland fish. Violation will lead to immediate confiscation of the ticket and exclusion from all fishing in the Stryne river. The owner/renter/ticket seller has a duty to provide information about the current regulations in the river, and to check whether the fisherman has paid the Fee.
